Party Girl. PARTY!

Dear Mai,

You are not a party girl. You think you're a party girl but you're not. You like to talk a big game but when the rubber meets the road you tend to save your crazy antics for the comfort of your own home.

So in early November of 2013 you went to your first "Bouncy House" party. There was a kid in your daycare that had his birthday party there. Now let me tell you, I was dreading this. The thought of a gazillion kids running around at the top of their lungs bouncing off things like they just had 8 shots of espresso sounds nightmare-ish to me. As with many things in my life over the past two years, I was wildly surprised that I thought "it wasn't that bad." Oh who am I kidding. It was a blast watching you run around like a lunatic there.

At this point you're still not playing with the other kids directly but you're definitely watching what they do and want to copy. I'm sorry to say that you might have inherited Daddy's "jumping" ability. This was about three months ago and I'm sorry to report that you still have no air in your "jump."

But look! It's brave Mommy going to take you down the big slide! Oh wait. She chickened out and turned around! You might have got your "toughness" from Mommy because your kind of a scaredy cat too.

We lasted about 40 minutes at the party before the wheels came off the bus. That's okay. I was ready to go too. :-)

We had a few visitors in November. Walt, one of my best friends since I was a kid visited us. You guys bonded. So at the time I'm writing this Walt and I have been friends for over 35 years. By the time you're reading this in your silver jumpsuit futuristic space outfit, we'll probably have known each other for like 50 years. Maybe less than that. Maths.

Then my great friend Matt came to visit! Get this, his wife Lynn (also a great friend) sent him out to Seattle as a present to go to the Red Fang concert with Shawn and I. How cool is that?

You loved Walt and Matt and kept asking for them for days after they left. While they were here you provided dinner entertainment and showed your East Toledo pride.

So... Red Fang. I think you saw your love for Red Fang starting to form during our little name that tune game. Its only grown since then. I bought this little $2 Red Fang Skull patch for you at the show and gave it to you the next morning. You treated it like it was made out of pure gold. If there was any doubt, you are my child.

Of course, while they were here I had to take them out to some no kid allowed places. Mommy was a sport and stayed home with you. However, where did she say I was when I was gone? A party. Daddy, party.

You still like to bust this fine piece of parenting out at random times. Most recently? At a checkup.

Doctor: "How has she been doing?"

Mommy: "Good! She..."

Maya (interrupts) "DADDY! PARTAY!!!!!"

Doctor: "What did she say?"

Mommy: "..."

So at this point, you LOVE to talk about parties. You love to say you want to go to a party. You say you want cake. (okay, you still love cake at parties) But once the actual party arrives you kind of shell up and become a Mommy and/or Daddy hanger. All talk Mai, all talk. Some other great friends, Dave and Meagan, have a daughter that turned 1 recently. It was all the rage at Casa Castañeda leading up to this event. PARTAY! CAKE! DADDY PARTAY! When the day finally arrived you mostly played by yourself and you were very calm and subdued. You did like your cake though. Apparently you decided that hands were optional cake utensils at this point too.

You did get to play your first safely attach the no-pin-having tail on the Fox though. (Why can't we just leave it as the donkey? #getOffMyLawn)

After the party you improved your zero to disaster time by a few milliseconds.

So I don't want to paint a bad picture here for you Mai. You're not even two yet so who cares about some of our little quirks. I know I've said it before but by the time you are reading this you know you need some tough skin to get along with this family. All our attempts to publicly humiliate you are in the spirit of good clean fun. You are an awesome, awesome, awesome little being Mai and you will know that this hits on a few of our secrets to a good life. Be humble and have fun. You absolutely can't go wrong if you take those to heart. We're just throwing you into the fire, so to speak.

Love,

Daddy

Thanksgiving 2013: Catching up series 1 of 21

Dear Mai,

There has been so much going on this Holiday season I haven't been good at keeping our log up-to-date. Mark this day in history that I start to catch up. You have been growing, doing so much and its been fun, trying and exhausting all at the same time. So let's start with Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite Holidays. Around my early 20s Thanksgiving changed from a family event to a friend event. When I was younger I couldn't get home for Thanksgiving because I was working all the time and one year Uncle Shawn and I were left alone on Thanksgiving Thursday with nothing to eat but awful gas station pizza and chips. Since that day we swore that we would never have such a lousy Thanksgiving meal ever again. The very next year we were living together and we hosted Thanksgiving dinner for any and all friends that couldn't get back to their families. I think we ended up with about 15 people in and out of the house the entire day and my first Turkey was a success!

Since then Thanksgiving has varied and now Aunt Becky and I are in love with this Holiday. You're probably wondering why I love this Holiday so much. I'm a wreck every year. I get all stressed out because I don't think we have enough food for everyone. (we usually have enough to feed the entire Seattle vicinity) And I stress that the food isn't going to turn out that great. While I've had my share of mishaps, it has been pretty successful as of late. Who knows though, by the time you are reading this things could have changed and Thanksgiving will be something different for us than it is now. That is why I want to capture this one. This was the first Thanksgiving you were more interactive with our guests and you tried your first Turkey! (you spit it all out but hey you tried it!)

You had fun playing with Lorelei and Page!

Visiting with Joyce, Keith, Divya, Shawn and Leigh Ann! (Becky, Ravisha and Emila too but somehow they avoided the camera that day)

I was a little less stressed this year than prior years but sometimes a cook needs his juice!

Of course we had more than enough food thanks to everyone! And it was all yummy. We also discovered that we had like three kinds of potatoes and you didn't like any of them. In fact you don't even like french fries that much. You are one weird kid! How do you not like potatoes?

Earlier in the morning you watched your first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with Mommy!

And I love this picture that Divya took of you and Mommy smiling at each other. I'm not sure if you're smiling at Mommy or smiling because you are sitting in your feed chair. You likey the food Mai.

It was a good night with some great friends that ended with a walk to our park around the corner to catch a city view.

The next morning you devoured your Thanksgiving breakfast. Goofball.

And we found Lorelei's Thanksgiving bracelet. She asked everyone to fill in what we were thankful for and created this from all her entries. I didn't have a chance to fill mine out but I'm sure you can guess what I'm thankful for. I never imagined a kid in our lives. I never imagined how much I love hanging out with you and sharing your experiences. I never imagined sitting here hours after you went to bed writing to your future self, hoping you will get something out of all this. Now, I can't imagine a world without you. That is what I'm thankful for.

With all my love,

Daddy

P.S. - Thanks for the photos Divya, Beck and Leigh!

The Daddy and Maya vacation - Day 4

Dear Mai,

Its day 4 of our just daddy and maya vacation and I think we're going to make it... barely.

Today you got your first "F" at a restaurant in a long time. Its ok though. Its been a long vacation for you and you've been carrying this cough with you for a bit. One thing is for sure, you love grandma's house. Today at the restaurant when you wanted to leave: "want grandma's house Pease!"

Don't worry pumpkin, home tomorrow to see mommy and goose!

Its nap time now! Daddy out!

Love you baby,

Daddy

Waiting for Santa

Dear Mai,

It's 11 pm east coast time, Christmas Day. It has been a whirlwind Christmas but we're having a blast. I have many memories to share With you but I think this one will live with me forever. Here you are waiting by Grandma's chimney for Santa. He already came and ate the cookies and milk you left out for him but you're still waiting. It was a pretty precious moment. Never mind the fact that every time Grandma's dogs bark you exclaim: "Santa! Cookies!" And run off following the canine frenzy.

It was a great Christmas Mai and we still have more fun waiting for us in Toledo!

Merry Christmas my sweet little girl. Love you,

Daddy

Bye bye high chair

Dear Mai,

Today probably marks the day that you will never ever sit in a hair chair again. I regretted letting you sit there for breakfast the minute after it started. Goose on the other hand is happy with these new developments.

Oh well. You live and learn I guess.

Love,

Daddy

Happy Birthday Mommy! (aka Party! Mommy! Party! Cake!)

Well Mai,

It's almost 7 PM, the evening before Mommy's birthday and you were a beast tonight. We've had a lot of visitors over lately and you've been staying up way past your bedtime so there is a little excuse for your craziness. But even though you were a little jerky pants, you still managed to get some energy and cuteness together to wish Mamma a happy birthday.

(can't view here, watch on youtube!)

We'll see how tomorrow goes but here's to you being sunshine and roses for Mommy's Birthday!

We love you Mommy!

Daddy

Maya, Daddy and the sick week (with a little Halloween and some name that tune games)

Dear Mai,

I can't believe its been almost two months since I've posted anything. Winter is pretty much here in Seattle and I have so many fun events we did in the summer to catch up on. We even had an awesome visit from Grammy!  But those posts will have to wait.

This week has been filled with Team Castaneda being sick. You and Mommy started getting sick last weekend and it finally caught up with me later in the week. Sheesh. I feel like maybe we should be quarantined or something. But do we let sickness stop us? Heck no, we still troop on. In all fairness you and Mommy handle sickness much better than Daddy. In fact we might be lucky if I make it through this post. I feel a little sore throat coming back. It's a little touch and go right now.

Anywho...

On Monday it was just you and I. I stayed home from work to hang out with the little sickie. (It was probably the start of my infestation) The weather was nice so we were able to get a few goose walks in. I love these pictures of you in the leaves. You were kicking, jumping and playing in them. You were having a blast! Your Aunt Linda has a great picture of your cousins Adam and Maria playing in the leaves when they were younger. This reminded me of that. I wanted to try to capture the same leaf throwing enthusiasm as Maria had in her photo shoot but Stella barely let me snap these few pics.

When you woke up from your nap you were whining for Mommy. You found this picture in my office and carried it with you the rest of the day. You even had me set it up while we at lunch! It was our little family lunch with a 2d Mommy.

But other than that, Monday was pretty much music and rest day. You LOVE to listen to music and watch music videos. You are even starting to make your own opinions and are requesting music daily. Its a little insane and If I'm being honest its kind of taxing sometimes. I'm saying this and I like the majority of the music you ask for. Kids are just relentless with this whole "more" and "again" thing. I guess it could be worse but I digress...

Thursday was Halloween and it was your first trick or treat night! We didn't get many good photos but you had a blast. First you and Mommy came to my work party downtown. This was your first taste of walking up and down the cube farm isles with your little bag saying "treat!" and people putting candy in your bag. Wow. Mind blown. You were pretty into that. We made it back home despite Seattle traffic's best effort and did a little trick or treating in our neighborhood. That was awesome. I haven't seen this many kids out trick or treating since I was a kid. You loved going to people's houses and saying "treat!" We only hit a block or so and went home to hand out our own candy. You kept pillaging our candy to give out, stealing all the lollipops saying "Pouch!" But you were good with sharing and loved seeing all the kids coming up saying trick or treat. You would get all excited and we tried to get you to say "Happy Halloween!" but it kind of came out "Happyeen!" Its ok. The spirit of your message was there. Like I said we didn't get any really good pics but here are a few. You went as a watermelon even though most people called you a strawberry. I tried to let mommy dress you as a baby zombie but she wasn't going for it. No one would have confused a strawberry for a baby zombie. I'm just saying.

On Friday I was full blown sick so I was home with you again. We had to run some errands but made a quick pitstop at the toy store. This was the first time I've seen you play with a little doll house. You played with this thing for nearly 30 minutes! I thought I was going to have a super tantrum on my hands trying to get you out of there. Luckily I was to bribe you on leaving the store in anticipation of a snack and some "Fang!"

Today you and I went to a kids class at the Seattle Symphony. If there is one thing I'm learning in becoming a parent is that you really have to lose any reservations about being and acting silly. One could argue that I lost those reservations a long time ago but those are stories are for another time. Wait. You'll never hear those stories. Just know that I was a perfect kid, teen and young adult. There I go losing the thread again... While the class was silly it was awesome getting to play with some of the instruments afterward. Your favorite was the Piano. Maybe we'll have to have Grandma Castaneda show you a few chops. (You'r favorite also could have been sitting at the kids desk and coloring. Who really knows these things)

Later on, Mommy was attempting to go through some of your old clothes to put away those summer outfits and prepare to get rid of some of the clothes that you've outgrown. Its a very bittersweet time for mommy right now. While the cleaning out of the old is good, the fact that you are growing into this little kid more and more every day and not a baby anymore is kind of shoved in our faces a bit. Luckily we don't have time to get too sappy because you're pretty funny. You saw some of your old clothes and wanted to put them on. So we helped. I think this might be a total of three outfits on and PJs playing a fourth layer as a cape.

Despite all of our sicknesses it was a pretty good week for the family. We ended today with a little name that tune fun. Like I said, you love to listen to music a lot and often ask for certain bands / songs by name. Well at least your names and how you identify them. I noticed one day when I was singing a red fang song you quickly yelled "Fang!" I was impressed that you recognized it from my out of tune rendition. So I sang another and you nailed that one too. So I give you in all its glory, our first video recording of the daddy and Maya, name that tune game. (Disclaimer: Yes I know I'm all over the map when it comes to being in tune. See the note above about losing all reservations about being silly) (Disclaimer #2: The reason I don't have any facial hair is because its Movember. I have to start the stache from scratch)

(If that video doesn't work, see it on youtube here!)

Well Mai, that's about a rap for today. I have so much more to catch you up on. So many milestones and fun events. Just know this; you are awesome, funny and too cute for words.

With love, love and more love,

Daddy

Wildlife tour of the PNW

Dear Mai,

This weekend was awesome. Grandma bought daddy a whale watching gift certificate for my last birthday and we finally decided to use it. I've been wanting to see whales since before we moved out to these parts. This weekend, it was going to happen.

So we took off Friday morning to catch the afternoon ferry. What does that mean to an 18 month old baby? Exploration time.

You loved to zig and zag up and down the ferry isles screaming your little nonsense. I never thought something could be so cute and irritating at the same time. It was pretty funny when you talked to people out on the deck of the ferry. Folks would say hi and fuss over your cute little self and you'd point to the water and say "wa ta." Just in case they didn't know there was water out there. Sometimes you'd follow that up with "bote." You probably felt some folks needed a good explanation on their surroundings.

The first part of the ferry ride to Lopez island was uneventful. It was pretty fogging and cloudy out so Mama and I changed our reservations for the whale watching tour. We pushed it back to the afternoon tour on Saturday hoping the fog would be gone by then. While it might be pretty and mysterious by itself, we worried it might hamper our ability to see what we came out here to see.

Apparently, we weren't the only one worried about visibility. Our ferry pretty much ran over a sail boat a few minutes outside of our final destination, Orcas island. Luckily no one was hurt. Well, everyone minus the boat.

Hopefully that was the worst part of our adventure. We chalked it up to it being Friday the 13. <tangent> By the time you are reading this it is quite possible that the Friday the 13th movie franchise is still going on so you won't think this is some dated pop culture reference. Maybe we will just have got back from seeing a double feature of Friday the 13th part 20 and Rocky XIX. </tangent>

So we hit Orcas island and hit our cottage where we are staying for the night. Pebble Cove Farm couldn't be any more quaint. It was this farm with a couple of suites and a cottage. We stayed in the cottage. The farm itself had all kinds of animals, gardens and it was right on the shore of massacre bay. (must resist another Friday the 13th reference)

First there was Buddy the horse. You were kind of terrified of Buddy the horse at first but you warmed up to him and gave him a few pets. Of course you know "what a horse says" so you were trying to "neigh" him on. He did not respond. He was pretty happy just grazing on the grass.

Then there were the chickens. You loved the chickens. You'd go "bawk bawk!" and they'd reply. They came right up to us and were very friendly. They were even friends with Buddy. One chicken was kicking up dirt backwards and you thought it was the funniest thing in the world. Hysterical giggles ensued. Then you put your hand down and "kicked" the dirt to mimic him. That drove me to hysterics. You're pretty darn funny sometimes Mai.

The goats were pretty funny to watch. They (like all the animals) expected us to give them food. We were obviously unprepared for their expectation of gifts so they turned back to playing around. Its apparently fun in the goat world to headbutt each other. The next day that one black goat tried to headbutt daddy. I'm going to say he liked me. Really I think he was trying to take me. Luckily I'm kind of a big guy. I ain't afraid of no goat. <tangent> If you are reading this and haven't seen ghostbusters yet, pause your little computing device, find me, smack my hand and make me show you this movie. It's classic. Classic like Casablanca classic. </tangent>

The farm also had this garden where we could go and pick whatever was fresh and use it. They had kale, apples, corn... just all kinds of stuff. We didn't pick any but we are planning on going back and just staying at the farm the whole time. Our cottage was pretty incredible and we'd love to cook with all their goodies. We could also get fresh eggs from the chickens too. Inside the garden there was this old fashioned toy that you loved. It was pretty darn cute.

They had this little swing and playset. You used to be a little terrified of swings but not any more! Pretty soon you'll be racing mommy and seeing who can get higher!

Then there was the rocky beach. Our own personal little beach to explore, walk on logs, rest in the hammock. There was even a little row boat that we could have taken out to explore. The little island in the cove is called skull island. Skull island on massacre bay. Someone HAD to be a horror movie fan when they named these.

Daddy got a raging fire going in the wood burning stove at the end of the day and we were all warm, comfy and cozy in our little cottage for the night. The place is pretty incredible. I mean c'mon. Our view out of our sliding glass doors was a pony eating grass in front of a private cove with an island. Sheesh that first night was peaceful.

The next day the tide was really low so we got to see some starfish, crabs and jellyfish. It was really neat (and kinda creepy) when you just stood still you could here this "sizzle." It was from all of the tiny little crabs just scurrying around.

You love to go beach combing with Mama and this beach did not disappoint.

It was a pretty magical trip already and it could have ended there. But there was still so much to do! I must digress a bit here to briefly talk about our dinner the night before at Doe Bay Cafe. It isn't that often you have an opportunity to eat a meal this good. I must say this was probably one of the best meals I've had in my life. It was just perfect. You weren't a big fan of it but that's ok. Some of what we ate is probably an acquired taste; and we had puffs, yogurt and applesauce just in case anyhow. That seemed to please you just fine.

I remembered seeing some TV special where this celebrity chef recommended it. We get there and it looks like a shack. We almost didn't go in. As soon as you step in it feels like you were swept away to a 5 star restaurant. It was busy, bustling and smelled amazing. We almost got turned away because we didn't have reservations and they were booked up for the night! Luckily island living is pretty laid back and the hostess made room for us. Man I'm going to remember that meal for the rest of my life.

Okay. Back to the story. After our casual morning on the farm and the beach, it was time to head back to the ferry to head to San Juan island and get ready for our tour! It was so cute watching you say goodbye to all the animals. "Bye chickens. Bye gotes. Bye Horse. Buddy. By watar. Wuv you."

As we were waiting for our ferry we had a little picnic and saw a whole bunch of bunnies. Maya: "Hop Hop Hop!" as you tried to bounce and imitate those crazy bunnies. You love to "hop" and "jump" these days even though you get zero air time. That is ok, Daddy probably doesn't clear any air when be bounces, jumps or hops either. Wait a minute. I don't do any of those things.

The trip to Friday Harbor was uneventful. (thankfully) We were a bit worried though because the fog hadn't lifted yet. You could barely see all the crazy island houses.

We bummed around Friday Harbor for a bit before it was time to board the Western Prince II. I have to admit, I was a little frightened.

This was you 5 minutes before we boarded. I wish I could sleep like that. But, you're kind of like mommy when it comes to naps sometimes. You can both be in an incredibly foul mood when you wake up from one. The first 15 minutes of our ride was you having one of the worst meltdowns this world has ever seen. It was dramatic, loud and drastic. All because we tried to put a life jacket on you. Well excuse us for caring and trying to protect you. Sheesh.

As we are taking off, Captain Peter and the two naturalist guides (Katie and Allison) explain that the whales are pretty far out passed the international boarder with Canada and its possible they'll have traveled too far. Now remember we were scheduled to go on the morning sail but we switched at the last minute. It has been a cruel joke that Daddy is a whale repellent and I thought... uh-oh. Here we go again. We could have saw them in the morning but we switched and now we won't see them in the afternoon. And we have a screaming tired little crazy person with us.

Luckily you calmed down inside the cabin. (Mama has the magic touch) We sailed for about an hour then we heard the engines cut. Followed by a few "Oooohs" and "Ahhs" outside. I quickly left you two and ran for the bow.

I finally saw my whales. Out in the middle of the sea. Wild whales. Wow.

This is one of those times where pictures will not do this experience justice. If you look closely you can see a whale breach here.

It was truly one of the coolest experiences in my life. And the best part? You loved it too! You were so good during this part. We probably sat and watched the whales play for 30-45 minutes and you were good the entire time. When one would breach or just bob up you would yell "FISH!" followed by a quieter "wale" It was so stinking cute. Then they would dive down and you'd shrug your shoulders, hold out you hand and say "GO?" (for where'd they go) Then one would surface again. "FISH!"

Katie and Allison, our naturalists, said over and over again that what we witnessed was very rare. They said that most tours would spend the entire time either trying to find them or wait for a breach. They didn't breach in the morning. We must have witnessed 30+ breaches along with a bunch of spyhops, cartwheels, tail flaps and general surfacing. It was amazing. They knew the names of the whales and said we witnessed a "superpod" because two different pods joined together to socialize. The two families were the K pod and the J pod. Granny was from the k pod and she was 102 years old! Lobo was the largest male and his dorsal fin was probably over 5 feet tall. It was just incredibly cool I can't even describe it.

Luckily Katie was super nice and offered to send us some pics she took of the trip. <advice> Maya, you should invest time and money in a good camera. Moments like these are rare. I never invested in a good "real" camera and even if I did I probably wouldn't have spent the time to learn to use it. If you do, that is just another way for you to express yourself and help others see your world. Then again by the time you are reading this you'll probably be able to take a picture with your mind so this advice might be moot. </advice>

The trip back to the island was still cool. We saw tons of porpoises, harbor seals and one bald eagle. To be honest I as kind of on "pretty overload" and nothing was going to compare to those magnificent orcas.

It was an incredible trip Mai. You were so awesome on it and you are such a good little traveler. Keep it up, see the world and live large little girl. We were one of the lucky ones to have such a good show. Mommy and I are even luckier because we got to share it with you. Chalk this weekend up to one of Daddy's best. I love you so much little girl.

Summer Time Rolls

Dear Mai,

I know its going to sounds SOOOOOO cliche, but...

I can't believe how big you are getting! It seems like our little baby is gone and the toddler years are suddenly upon us! I'm not ready for actual "parenting!!!!"

Your mother and I were just saying something that was a first for us here in Seattle. "It feels like summer has been really long."

That's it. We doomed ourselves. This winter is probably going to be beyond severe. We ruined it for everybody. Oh well, we should probably just concentrate on soaking up as much sun as we can and enjoy this awesome summer we've been having. In fact we have been...

Besides the travels we've been...

Eating a lot of grapes and blueberry snacks!

Checking out our new neighborhood parks and getting ready for OSU football season

Going up and down slides all by our little selves! You climbed up this entire slide backward already!

Learning some chores. Swifer girl, swifer!

Playing dress-up with Mommy's clothes

Really just becoming a fashionista right before our very eyes

We've had endless, tireless trips to Ikea

Fun trips to the wading pool in West Seattle

And picnics with friends at the West Seattle spray park

And despite our last mishap, we are still trying new healthy foods that are yum!

We're taking off bright and early tomorrow for our next adventure. We'll see how a opinionated, talkative, independent 17 month old handles a road trip! You better buck it up missy. Not liking road trips is grounds for dismissal in this family. :)

Love,

Daddy
